Welcome Message from the HKOA President

Dear Fellows, Members and Honourable Guests,

On behalf of the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association, it is my great pleasure to greet you all with a very warm welcome to our 39th Annual Congress of the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association.

The main theme of this Conference is ‘Rebuild and Rebrighten Ageing Orthopaedics to the Next Century’. Much like other regions of the world, Hong Kong is facing the challenge of ageing population. The prevalence of chronic orthopaedic diseases is increasing. Therefore, orthopaedic surgeons play an important role in enhancing the management of these ageing associated diseases. Our programme includes the updated management of degenerative conditions of different parts of the body. The most advanced surgical techniques for these conditions will be illustrated.

Fragility hip fractures impose a major health care burden in Hong Kong. To overcome this challenge, the management of patients with these fractures is dependent on comprehensive multidisciplinary management approach. Implementation of an appropriate clinical pathway, fracture liaison service to provide rehabilitation in the community and secondary fracture prevention, as well as improved surgical techniques and implants can enhance patient outcomes and prevent further fractures.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all members of the Organising Committee, led by Co-chairmen Dr Albert Hsu and Dr Kam-kwong Wong for organising a fantastic programme, inspiring us to rebuild and rebrighten ageing orthopaedics to the next century. Renowned experts are invited to enlighten us with their lectures. I believe it will be a wonderful opportunity to share professional knowledge and foster friendships.

Finally, I wish you all a fruitful and enjoyable Congress.

I look forward to welcoming you in Hong Kong.

Dr Kwai-ming SIU
President, The Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association
